Keep It Simple

It’s hard to believe another month has past, and I haven’t blogged.  I haven't been writing much at all, actually. In general, life has revolved around work, changing our diet at home, and my girls’ dancing.  Everything I'm doing is more immediate.  Make bread.  Go to dance class. Grade papers.  Go to dance class. Read food labels. Go to dance class. In many ways, life is less complicated.
Well, except for that whole guilt about not reading and writing as much thing.
Ah speaking of reading and writing, though my list of books read in 2013 is relatively short, I particularly enjoyed a couple.  I already talked about Eleanor & Park in the importance of place.  The other is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.

What stood out for me with both of these books was just how powerful simplicity is.  Such a great reminder.  Just tell the story.  Good books don't have to be overcomplicated or overwritten.
Nor do our lives.
Our every day lives are filled with good stories.  It's easy to over complicate life, too.  We add to our own conflict and drama.  Books can be overwitten with grandious metaphors or lofty language. Lives are overwritten by trying to do too much, maybe even trying to be too much.

So, I remind myself today to keep it simple.  Tell the story.  Live the life.  Enjoy the moment.

  1. This is the exact discovery I made at writers' group yesterday. I was *way* overreaching into a super dark place that my RIP doesn't need to go. Everything I need to make the plot work is already there, and I don't need all the melodrama that is in the current draft.
